Level Up Your Calligraphy: Using a Laser Level to Create Perfectly Crafted Place Cards

Using a guide line with a laser level to create calligraphy in a straight line

When you’re hosting family or friends from a meal, you’ll no doubt want to add place cards to help everyone to their seats (and help certain people to avoid other people!) But what do you do when your place cards are an unconventional shape? Sure, you could use pencil guidelines but depending on the ink you are using, some can effectively trap any pencil marks it covers, making them impossible to remove.

I have a solution though – the laser level. You may already have one in your toolkit, but if you need to buy one, you can buy one very inexpensively. The laser line it creates provides the perfect removable guide to make sure your work stays where it should be.

I use mine with a piece of Rhodia dot pad, that I have marked out at the right height for my writing – you will see if you watch the video that mine is set up for multiple uses. I have been able to mark out each line, with spacing in between for consistent wording and spacing for every piece.

Line your laser level up with the bottom of a line on your Rhodia pad and add your place card over the top to provide you with the guide line to carefully write each person’s name.

Whilst I’ve used an unconventional shaped place setting to demonstrate how to use the technique, it works just as effectively with square or rectangular place cards, especially when using inks like Tom’s Studio that would otherwise trap any pencil marks.
